Musical ride- Royapettah to Egmore!

Soundharya Jayaraman, Sep 14 2009 6:34AM

Autos in Chennai only churn out complaints! He is either too rash, asks for way too much or blares loud music!!! But it’s not every day that you come across a happy, entertaining autorickshaw driver who gives gyan!! I took an auto from Royapettah to Egmore one evening and he said the usual things, “It’s raining madam so its ten bucks extra”. I was in a hurry and got in, didn’t realize then that it was going to be a ride that I am never going to forget. He started singing and that initially got me a little annoyed but after sometime I found myself humming. And slowly we slipped into a conversation. He told me he studied till the first standard in his village and he still remembers the poems he learnt. And he actually started reciting them!! Then he told me something that I will always remember. He said that it’s not enough if you and I are happy and that you have to make sure the people around you are happy as well. And he makes sure the people he ferries step out smiling, which I did. Before I paid him I asked his name. he immediately quipped, “ Venugopal madam, How’s my name?”. I told him that he was a fantastic person with a great name! I don’t think ill ever meet another autorickshaw driver like Venugopal. I would love to listen to him again…

Mommy’s day out at the US open: super mom Clijsters

It was heartwarming to see 18 month Jada completely unaware of sharing the spotlight with super mom Clijsters. Kim clijsters recently returned to the sport after a two-year break, during which she got married and started a family. It was an “aha” moment for working women/ mothers across the world to see a mother match the tenacity and defeat a 19 year old. She defeated Caroline Wozniacki 7-5, 6-3 in a hard-earned, hard-hitting victory that earned the 26 year old a place in history as the first mother to win a grand slam victory since Evonne Goolagong took the US Open title in 1980. As I scoured through all her interviews this interview caught my attention, Wozniacki was giving a press meet and she said " Kim had nothing to lose she played for the joy of playing and I think that’s why she won the match." Kim Clijsters also in one of her interviews commented “it was meant to be a practice exercise and not a tilt at history.” Motherhood gives two options to a woman, the option of bidding good bye to professional life or the super mom route. The return to the professional world comes with a price and fear of not being able to do both. But Clijsters proved all those naysayers wrong. Thank you Clijsters you made every working mother proud .
